Library Instruction for Students

New technology brings many new online resources to the library collection, and often a whole new way to do research. Library instruction can help make students aware of the services and resources that the library has to offer.

We offer classes, two online tutorials, and online guides, which teach basic library skills through to advanced research skills for specific disciplines and course assignments.

Online Tutorials:

  1. Library: Introduction to Research

This tutorial is intended for first term students, in all disciplines. It is a Blackboard course, with self-tests, marked quizzes and a My Assignment exercise that allows students to practice finding books and articles on their own research topic. See the FAQs for more information.

  2. Evaluating Web Resources

This Blackboard tutorial, including marked quizzes, introduces students to the criteria used to evaluate websites that they find when they search Google (as we know they will!).

Contact Ophelia Ma (local 5527) to set up an online tutorial for your students.

Library Classes:

The library offers a wide range of classes. These classes can be held in a lab for hands-on learning, or in a classroom. Whether you're planning a major research assignment or just want to be sure students are comfortable using library resources, contact your subject librarian to find out how we can work together to design a class tailored to meet the specific needs of your students.

Assignment Tips and Subject Guides:

Assignment Tips are short guides designed to help students research specific topics, with suggestions about search strategies, reference books, and recommended article databases. They are usually posted in conjunction with the online tutorial or a class.

Subject Guides are found on the Library website, and list general research resources for individual disciplines. Contact your subject librarian if you'd like one developed for your discipline. The Library also has a number of general guides, such as Citing Your Sources, to provide online support with citations for students at time of need.
