Extreme Makeover underway

Here's what up to 130 layers of paint accumulated over 25 years looks like...the before and after. Photos by Robin Richardson.

The old adage ‘many hands make light work’ applies to the work that was undertaken to renovate the Studio 58 theatre over the holiday break. The successful Extreme Makeover Campaign brought in much needed funding to upgrade the theatre facilities. That work has begun and so far the decking on the floor has been replaced, new carpet has been laid and state-of-the-art reflective nosing is on the stairs. There are still things to do, but a great deal of work was completed in a short period of time. We have many people to thank, including: Scott Stuart from the Facilities & Purchasing Department of Langara College, Ken Head from Irwin Seating Services, Dustin Freeland, Jay Clift, Robin Richardson, Sean Oliver, Alex Rose, not to mention Bruce Kennedy, Carol Chrisjohn and our amazing donors…without whom none of this would have happened! When you attend Julius Caesar you’ll see a big improvement!

The 13th Chair a rousing success

2011 ended with a wonderful production of the murder mystery, The 13th Chair by Bayard Veiller and directed by Sarah Rodgers. From the Whodunnit Lobby Contest, to our Vaudeville duet, the audience was treated to a fun experience in the theatre.

Here’s what our reviewers had to say:

Most impressively, there isn’t a weak link in this large cast. Watch any actor at any point and you’ll find that they’re all making specific – and often surprising – choices. Read the full review

The Georgia Straight

Sure there was no way to really guess who the murderer was – it’s one of those mysteries where it could have been anyone, but man o’ man my companion and I could not stop giggling and smiling! I don’t mean to get in such lather about this production but it was gosh darn fun! Read the full review.

We extend a huge thanks to all our patrons who attended The 13th Chair, our donors who contributed to the Whodunnit Lobby Contest & we look forward to seeing you in the theatre for Julius Caesar!

SOUL RESOURCE continues Risky Nights 12th season

Soul resourceRisky Nights continues with SOUL RESOURCE directed by Rachel Peake on stage February 6 – 12. A classic story of jealousy and greed, Soul Resource looks at our abuse of natural resources in a very human context.

Now in its 12th season, the Risky Nights Series is designed as a bridge between classroom work and main stage productions. At the conclusion of their second year of training, students have an invaluable opportunity to create every aspect of an original theatre piece from start to finish with a professional director, and perform it for an intimate audience. Call the Studio 58 Box Office @ 604.323.5227 for details and reservations.
