4PLAY: New Work by Excited Writers continues a Studio 58 tradition. This year marks the 9th mounting of this popular festival of one-act plays, featuring original work by Studio 58 students, once again under the tutelage of award-winning playwright Aaron Bushkowsky. In two exciting programs, directed by four of BC’s best directors, the eight playwrights delve into contemporary themes with a sharp eye and fresh voice.
Aaron Bushkowsky remarks, “This year was an ambitious one with eight students (or former students) coming together to present four short plays. The theme seems to be “the surreal world” -- perhaps because we are living in one. This work is fantastically imaginative and poignant, and more than any other year I can remember, risky. The risks, though, are admirable and interesting and give the audience plenty to laugh and think about it. Comedy is tricky, but when it works, it’s wonderful. Consider these projects to be newly-born. They may not know the world intimately yet, but we love them for it and laugh with them. Congratulations to all the artists involved, particularly our newly-born playwrights – for many of them this is their first production ever.”
